Two Potholes on the Road to BPM
May 1, 2008 10:54 AM
Although adopting and implementing a business performance management (BPM) solution is a wise decision for companies looking to improve performance and processes, there are still "potholes" along the road to successful utilization, according to Craig Schiff, president and CEO of BPM Partners. In his article "Danger -- BPM Ahead, Part 1," Schiff identifies two potential ruts in BPM implementation: selecting the wrong solution and delivering an underutilized system. While functionality across BPM solutions may seem comparable, vendors can provide capabilities very differently, and identifying your company's unique needs is key. "For example," explains Schiff, "you can find dozens of BPM solutions that will work with Excel, but only a handful probably work with it in the way that your organization and existing spreadsheets require." Emphasizing strong and healthy communication from the start -- beginning with the vendor selection process -- will help to avoid "user defection" and encourage adoption.
