Disclosures about Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities, Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Statement No 161, is intended to provide investors with more transparency into an organization's financial standing, performance, and cash flows. This new standard goes into effect for financial statements filed after November 15, 2008, and requires disclosure of derivative instruments and their gains, losses, and credit risks. "Use and complexity of derivative instruments and hedging activities have increased significantly over the past several years," says Kevin Stoklosa, project manager. "By requiring additional information about how and why derivative instruments are being used, the new standard gives investors better information upon which to base their decisions."
