Achieving good governance makes a $10 million to $20 million impact per year on a $1 billion fund, according to "Best-Practice Investment Management: Lessons for Asset Owners". This joint research by Roger Urwin of Watson Wyatt and Professor Gordon Clark of Oxford University identifies core attributes of organization effectiveness, including mission clarity and risk-budgeting framework, as well as exceptional attributes, such as supportive compensation and real-time decision-making. "The potential return advantage should be a strong motivator among institutional funds to improve governance and then align it with investment strategy," says Andy Grimes, investment consultant with Watson Wyatt Australia.
