The venerable spreadsheet -- indispensable accounting tool or budgeting nightmare? The debate rages on, and the answer, of course, depends on who you ask. Many financial software vendors have a big stake in demonizing spreadsheets, while a few on the "other side" have a vested interest in their continued proliferation. Ventana Research's opinion on the matter? While spreadsheets are fine for one-off analyses or individual tasks, they're simply not appropriate for collaborative, repetitive, enterprise-wide processes. Yeah, you've heard this before, but it's likely that your company continues to use spreadsheets in this manner. The good news is that Ventana predicts new capabilities are coming soon to the world of spreadsheets that will begin to address their core failings as an enterprise tool, which are outlined in this research note. Ventana also takes Microsoft to task for its "monopolist treatment" of Excel as a revenue source that "has meant a standstill in addressing its shortcomings."
