Ventana Research recently completed a study titled "ERP Innovation," which sought to determine if and how companies are moving beyond the first-generation objective of increasing efficiency through automation. The research found that innovative companies have been able to attain a higher return on their investment by taking greater advantage of capabilities that already exist in their enterprise resource planning software. The key takeaway is that ERP innovation is often stifled by an all-too-familiar divide: IT staff do not understand enough about business and finance to see how existing systems can support process improvement, and finance people do not understand enough about ERP systems to be aware of their possibilities.
